12 Tips to Take Better Photos

i love you photo

One of the questions I keep asking some of my friends and blog readers who have just started photography is: “How can I take good photos with what I have without spending too much money on new cameras? and issue lenses? ” Since digital SLR cameras and mirrorless DSLRs have become more affordable and people have started to buy advanced entry-level cameras. The general public has shown great interest in photography. A big hurdle that everyone faces at some point is the fact that most professional photographers when showing the material, used to take great pictures, can only make great photos with expensive equipment. What happens from there really depends on the portfolio and the seriousness with which a person wants to be photographed: some buy expensive equipment and think that this will help them take good photos and improve their photography while others will stop. and they just “aim and shoot” their DSLR or mirrorless camera and find that they can’t handle what they have better.

In fact

you don’t need expensive equipment to take great pictures. I always tell people when they buy their first DSLR that “entry-level DSLR gets you up to 90%”. Of course, the Pro team will always be better and faster than the base team, after all, it is called “Pro”. Some entry-level cameras such as the Nikon D5600 come very close to professional cameras like the D500 in terms of image quality or even exceed them, according to critics.

The biggest difference between an amateur and professional teams today is a number of advanced features, not just the quality of the camera sensor. Compared to entry-level DSLRs and mirrorless cameras, professional cameras generally have the most options, they have longer shutter speeds and faster frame rates, they can deal with abnormal temperatures/humidity, they have faster-processing speed, better autofocus, etc. “High- End “Professional devices (like the Nikon D850 / Z7 / D5) offer lower noise levels, better dynamic range, and better image quality thanks to a larger full-frame sensor, while all mirrorless entry-level DSLR cameras on the market today are” growth factor “sensors. Entry-level DSLRs from Nikon have a trimming factor of 1.5x, while entry-level DSLRs from Canon have a trimming factor of 1.6x. I will not go too far as to the “cultivation factor”.

But forget the clipping factors, the types of sensors, and other types of technical waste: ask yourself a question: who could have better color, a great artist with a mediocre brush, or a beginner with the most advanced brush in the world? The answer is obvious … a camera is just a tool in a photographer’s toolbox. Now give the great artist the same great brush and he will create even better colors. That’s why professional photographers buy the best equipment because they know how to make the most of it.

If this idea seems crazy to you, check out the video we made to take good photos with any camera:

This article isn’t about camera equipment anyway. Let’s go on how to use what you have today and learn how to take great photos.

1) Don’t leave your camera at home

It may sound strange, but what is the quality of your camera when you leave it at home? I missed so many photos that I forgot to take the camera with me. Whether it is something stupid or unique to have a camera with you, it could lead you through these rare and unique moments in life.

2) Take lots of photos

The more you shoot, the more you’ll learn, it’s that simple. Use every opportunity to take pictures, whether early in the morning or late in the evening. If you take a lot of pictures, you will understand how to use your camera in different lighting conditions and what works and what does not. At the same time, if your images are not rotating as well, you will be looking for and reading other articles, books, and magazines

3) Visit local zoos, botanical gardens, butterfly pavilions, and animal shelters

Photographing wildlife can be very expensive and potentially risky. If you don’t have a long telephoto lens, you can try visiting your local zoo or shelter for great photos. Large zoos with a lot of free space are ideal for photography because fences and other artificial objects are not so well visible. You can get close enough to certain animals and capture great moments.

macro photography

Botanical gardens and butterfly pavilions are perfect for close-up / macro photography. You can experiment with flowers, butterflies and other insects at different times of the day and not only learn a lot, but also take beautiful pictures. Everyone loves flowers and butterflies!

4) Join local and online photo clubs and take photos with professionals

Search for photo clubs near you online and you will likely find at least several local photo clubs. Many of these clubs are free or have very low monthly fees. Join one or more of these clubs and you will not only learn from other photographers but also have access to valuable information about local events that are worth seeing and photographed. Find advanced photographers and professionals who are really good at what they do and ask if you can help them with their jobs. You will be amazed at how friendly and helpful many photographers are and how much you will learn from them.

5) Consider photography workshops

If you have extra money, you should invest in a photo studio. Workshops can cost as little as $ 20 to $ 50 for a session in a large auditorium, or for several thousand dollars if you’re in a small group with a well-known photographer. The workshops are good for those who want to learn photography from real professionals quickly. Personally, I’ve never attended a workshop and I didn’t mind spending more time reading books/articles and learning from other photographers. However, if you want to speed up your learning process quickly, find and target a workshop that best suits your needs.

6) Down and dirty

If you’re still taking most pictures at eye level, you should experiment with angles. Try kneeling from a different perspective or even lying on the floor. Lowering can give excellent results, especially when photographing people and animals.

7) Learn how to take sharp photos

I recommend reading my article about taking sharp photos and avoiding blurring of the image. Soft and blurry images can be very disappointing. If you’re having trouble creating crisp photos, this article is sure to be helpful.

8) Use a circular polarizer for landscape photography

I just finished an article about using a circular polarizer that you should check out. It goes against what I said earlier about taking pictures with what you have, but I think a polarizer is an indispensable tool in every photographer’s pocket. So, I recommend trying one if you have never done it before, especially for landscape photography.

9) Use a tripod

If you don’t have a tripod yet, I recommend getting it as soon as possible. Why? Because a tripod opens up new possibilities for photography in low light conditions. You can experiment with light at night and take very nice pictures of things that come to life at night. With a tripod, you can take sharp photos of still images and blur moving subjects, creating very interesting and dynamic photos.

You can also use a tripod to shoot lightning, shoot the moon, take part in a nighttime flashlight, shoot fireworks and sunsets, and more!

With a tripod, you can use very low ISO values for the best picture quality and as little noise as possible. You can also use small apertures such as 1:16 to achieve a much greater depth of field or to create HDR (High Dynamic Range) images.

10) shoot during golden hours

Direct sunlight can create really ugly shadows not only on people’s faces but also on everything else around them, which leads to bad images. The best time to take photos is in the early morning and late afternoon when the light is soft and soft. Obviously, sunrise and sunset times vary throughout the year. So, all you need to do is search on Google for “sunrise and sunset times” and find your city. For landscape photography, you want to be there before sunrise and sunset to capture the first and last rays of light, while for portrait photography, two hours after sunrise and two hours before sunset. The sun seems to be the best time. Of course, you must also take into account the weather conditions. I love to do portraits when the sky is covered with fine clouds because the clouds diffuse the light and can make it fall very gently on the skin. On the other hand, very thick/stormy clouds can reduce the amount of available light, which makes capturing fast-moving subjects a bit difficult. So, try it and see what works for you.

11) Record in RAW and use Lightroom for post-processing

If you’re still using JPEG for your photos, it’s time to continue with RAW. Nowadays, every DSLR can take pictures in RAW format. Therefore, set it to RAW and do not revert to JPEG. A RAW image is called a “raw image” for a reason: it is a raw image with many more colors than a JPEG image. RAW gives you a lot more flexibility and is preferred for printing because you can convert it to any color space. RAW takes up more space than JPEG, but storage is so cheap these days that it’s not a big deal. As far as storage on your PC is concerned, you can buy a large capacity hard drive for less than $ 100 and you will need lots of photos to fill it up. PC storage is therefore not a problem. Other than that, there is no reason not to shoot RAW!

If you still manually store your images in multiple folders on your hard drive, I highly recommend installing Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. Before launching Lightroom, I processed all of my images in Adobe Photoshop + Camera Raw. Not only was the process very long and cumbersome, but my files were scattered everywhere and nothing was organized. After using Lightroom, I realized that I should have done it a long time ago: it has made a huge difference in the way I record, process and organizes my images. By the way, for those who love Camera Raw: Lightroom has integrated all the functions of Camera Raw directly into the development module, so you don’t miss anything. And yes, I have tried many other image suites and none of them are as good as Lightroom.

12) travel and find good places to take cool photos

Don’t stay at home alone and expect good photos. Find local and state parks or maybe even national parks near you (up close, I mean an acceptable route) and look for potentially good photo points. For landscape photography, you have to keep an eye on what looks good and what doesn’t. For example, a calm lake is a great way to create a reflective image that can be exceptionally beautiful at sunrise or sunset when clouds, trees, and other objects are reflected in the lake. So if you find a calm, medium-sized lake, try several times to get there at sunrise and sunset and see what you can get (a tripod may be necessary to get a good picture). Drive for portrait photography and see if you can find places that look good in the background. The best thing about portrait photography is that it is often easy to find a good background. All you have to do is find something interesting, like an old building, a painted fence, or an old tree. Use your imagination and soon you will find great places near you. If you can afford to travel, do it as often as possible and, as mentioned above, always take your camera with you!
